Originally the Association was known as the Wantage Produce Association. The origins of the Association go back to the WW II Dig for Victory campaign, and possibly earlier, when it helped distribute subsidized fertilizers and disseminate gardening knowledge, helping feed the Nation during the WW II and the years following it. By the year 2000 it was decided to change the name to Wantage Gardeners Association to reflect the broader nature of the members interests in gardening.
The Association is a not for profit trading group run by volunteer members and affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society. It is open to all people with an interest in gardening who can make use of the Association's activities.
We sell nearly 200 items, decided by the members. Where possible we buy bulk and bag off into plain packaging and liquids we decant into returnable bottles. We also run a successful Dobie's seed and plant catalogue giving a good discount to members.
We open every Saturday morning, including Holiday weekends, 9am to 12 mid-day starting the season from the first Saturday in February and ending the last Saturday in September. During September hours are reduced to 10am to 12 noon.
Since 1965 the "Shop" has been located in the Scout Romany hut in Icknield Lane, next to the Wantage Air Cadets HQ, with ample parking available. Access is also available from Springfield Road end of the Scouts Drill Hall via a pathway alongside the rifle range. OX12 8ES will find us on your SatNav.
